Swap Screen Time for Playtime: The Benefits of Sensory Play for a Family Digital Detox

For many families, Lent offers a great opportunity to make small changes or break certain habits that could bring more meaning, calm or connection to our days. Even if you don’t celebrate Lent, there are moments throughout the year, whether it’s a new season, school term or simply when life feels a little too busy, that can be the perfect time for a gentle reset.
In our household, we’ve decided to take a gentle hiatus from screens.
Screens are a part of modern family life, and they’re by no means the enemy. They help us work, stay connected and sometimes, just get through the day. I have suffered with serious mum guilt about screentime. Some friends have banned screens completely, others only allow them at weekends, and every family is different. It’s important to remember that we shouldn’t judge ourselves, or others, for the choices we make.

The truth is, screens can be incredibly educational. My toddler for example has learned counting and words through playful apps, while my seven-year-old has used interactive games to develop problem-solving skills.
But Lent (or any reflective moment in the year) offers a lovely reminder to pause and ask: what could we gain by putting screens down a little more often?
For children, less screen time doesn’t have to feel like a loss – it can be an opportunity to rediscover the joy of play. Sensory play in particular offers a simple, screen-free way to help little ones learn, explore and express themselves, without needing a Wi-Fi connection.
Why Play Is So Important
Play is more than just entertainment – it’s how children make sense of the world. Through hands-on experiences like pouring, squeezing and building, children develop the foundations for learning, creativity and wellbeing.
Research consistently shows that play is vital for brain development. Every time a child explores textures, experiments with materials, or engages in open-ended activities, their brain is building and strengthening connections that support language, problem-solving, memory and emotional regulation.

Sensory play has many benefits. It builds fine motor skills, boosts brain development, improves concentration and communication, and more. Our blog: ‘The 7 Amazing Benefits of Sensory Play for Children,’ explores these in more detail. But in short, play helps children learn, and sensory play is one of the most effective, natural ways to nurture growth, particular in their early years.
During Lent, or any time during the year where you feel you may need a mindful reset, taking a pause from screens can make these moments of exploration more visible. It gives children the time and space to engage with hands-on experiences that boost confidence, curiosity and calm, while giving parents a welcome chance to slow down alongside them — whether it’s reading the morning paper, or simply watching with admiration as their little ones experience the joy of play.
Why Screen Time Creeps In… And How to Balance It
Between work, school runs and keeping the house in order, it’s no wonder screen time can easily increase. Screens can be educational, help develop new skills and give parents a well-deserved breather, and there’s no harm in that.
The challenge is balance. Screens become less of an issue when they complement hands-on experiences instead of replacing them. A family digital detox, even a small one, can help make space for activities that promote physical, cognitive and emotional development.
Screens certainly do have benefits:
- Early learning apps – supporting literacy, numeracy and vocabulary
- Interactive games – helping with problem-solving and critical thinking
- Shared screen time – offering opportunities for discussion and bonding as a family
By pairing screens with sensory play, you can create a balanced environment where children can enjoy the best of both worlds.

Practical Tips for a Gentle Family Digital Detox
If you are considering a family digital detox, here are some tips to help make it a success.
1. Start Small
You don’t have to completely change your routine. Choose one point during the day when your children would normally have screens, and swap it for some hands-on play. A short digital detox can help children re-engage with the world around them.
2. Create a Play Area
Set up a dedicated space for sensory play — a PlayTRAY on the kitchen table, a basket of sensory play tools, or a corner with open-ended materials. Just make sure it’s accessible and inviting.

3. Join In (When You Can)
Children are more likely to choose play over screens when you show interest. Sit nearby, comment on what they’re doing, or join in. Children crave connection, so if you’re showing an interest, they’ll be more inclined to get involved.

4. Offer Choices, Not Rules
Instead of “no screens”, try “lets play first, then watch something together.” Framing it as a choice empowers children instead of restricting them.
5. Replace Screens with Something Engaging
The best way to reduce screen time? Make the alternative irresistible! And sensory play is so much fun!
