Role play is a powerful extension of sensory play. While sensory play focuses on stimulating children’s senses through touch, sight, sound, smell, taste and movement, role play allows them to process real-life scenarios and make sense of the world around them in a safe and contained environment.

When children are immersed in pretend play scenarios, they explain their ideas, ask questions and interact with others. For some children, role play provides a low-pressure environment to practise communicating, which they may feel too shy or unsure of to try in other scenarios.
