Colour recognition might seem simple, but it’s a key step in early learning that supports language development, self-expression and emotional understanding. Colours help children communicate feelings and spark creativity, offering endless opportunities for exploration and discovery.
At Inspire My Play, our mission is to open up a world of sensory play for the benefit of children everywhere. And what better way to do that than through playful, colourful activities that help toddlers learn, grow and have buckets full of fun — not just in spring, but all year round!
Here are five easy, engaging ways to learn colours through sensory play:
1. Rainbow Colour Match
Bring a burst of colour to playtime with our Rainbow Colour Match Printable — a fun way to practice colour recognition and build fine motor skills.

Here’s how to do it:
- Add rice (or any other sensory base) to the deep tray of the PlayTRAY.
- Scatter coloured pom-poms or felt balls amongst your sensory base.
- Print out our Rainbow Colour Match Printable and place in the lid of the PlayTRAY or on any flat surface.
- Encourage your child to retrieve the pom-poms from the rice using tongs and match them to the corresponding coloured band on the rainbow.
- You can even add velcro dots to the printable so the pom-poms or felt balls stick to in place — great for little ones still mastering their hand-eye coordination.
Two more fun ways to use the Rainbow Colour Match Printable:
- Give your child dot markers and ask them to fill in the white spots with the right colour.
- Stick the printable to a box, punch holes through the white dots and invite your child to post the matching pom-poms through the holes.
Each variation supports fine motor development, coordination and concentration, while making colour learning a joyful, sensory-rich experience.
2. DUPLO Patterns

Each card features bright, repeating brick patterns for your child to copy, continue or create their own versions of. It’s a wonderful way to encourage pattern recognition, colour matching and fine motor skills — all through hands-on building fun.
Here’s how to do it:
- Print out our Duplo Patterns Printable.
- Set out a small selection of building blocks that match the colours on the cards.
- Encourage your child to recreate the pattern, continue it, or come up with their own design.

3. Nature Colour Match
Learning colours doesn’t have to happen indoors. Head outside and take inspiration from the beauty of nature! This simple Nature Colour Match activity encourages children to slow down, observe and engage their senses while exploring the world around them. It’s also a lovely reminder for parents to pause, breathe and take in their surroundings too.

Here’s how to do it:
- Paint coloured strips on a piece of sturdy cardboard.
- Cover the surface with contact paper (sticky side up).
- Head outdoors and ask your child to collect leaves, flowers, or other natural treasures and stick them to the matching colour.
This activity combines sensory exploration with outdoor play, helping children connect what they see in nature with their developing understanding of colours. It’s also a wonderful way to build observation skills and introduce early science concepts through play.
✨ Try this activity in your garden, at the park, or on a nature walk. It’s a fun, hands-on way to bring learning to life!
4. Colour Mixing
Introduce your toddler to the magic of colour with this simple and fascinating water play activity! It’s such a great way to explore cause and effect while building fine motor skills.
Here’s how to do it:
- Fill your PlayTRAY compartments or small containers with water.
- Add a few drops of food colouring to create red, blue and yellow water.
- Provide silicone droppers and sponges and invite your child to explore what happens when they mix the colours together.
This activity introduces children to primary and secondary colours while encouraging creativity and focus. Using droppers is also fantastic for strengthening hand muscles and developing control — an important pre-writing skill.
✨ Our silicone dropper set is designed especially for little hands. Soft, easy to grip and perfect for water and STEM activities, it’s available in gorgeous pastel and natural shades. Learn more here.

This travelling colours activity is a fun and engaging twist on traditional colour mixing, bringing a sense of movement and discovery to the process. As the colours slowly travel and blend, children can observe how new shades are created in a magical way.
If you’d like to try this activity yourself and explore even more easy-to-set-up ideas, you can find full instructions and plenty of inspiration in our Sensory Play Activity Cards.
5. Magnetic Wands
Combine a little science with colour learning using magnetic wands and counters. Such a fun way to develop hand-eye coordination and hand strength while exploring cause and effect.
Here’s how to do it:
- Place different coloured magnetic counters in the base of your PlayTRAY and cover them with rice.
- Give your child a magnetic wand and encourage them to pick up the counters one by one.
- Once collected, ask them to sort the counters by colour, placing them in the compartments of the PlayTRAY.
- Count each colour together and talk about which colours there are more or less of — a great way to introduce early maths and one-to-one correspondence (learning how to count a group of objects by assigning one number to each object and only counting each object once.)
Removing the counters from the magnetic wands provides a great workout for little hands while also supporting colour recognition, sorting skills and early numeracy.
✨ You can buy the magnetic wands and counters, along with a selection of our favourite sensory play resources on our Amazon Sensory Play Storefront. Pair them with our multi-award-winning PlayTRAY for endless fun and learning!
