Taste-Safe Mud Play Ideas

Construction Site Sensory Play

If your little one is into cars, trucks and diggers, transform your mud into a busy construction site.    Place your taste-safe mud into the PlayTRAY and add diggers, trucks and miniature traffic cones. For even more construction fun, add our mini bricks and blocks for building and transporting, along with mini scoops and bowls for exploration.

The PlayTRAY works perfectly for contained construction setups, helping to minimise mess while giving children plenty of room to build and really dig into their imagination!

Farmyard Mud Play

My girls have always loved making farm setups in the PlayTRAY, and taste-safe mud is the perfect addition to any small-world farm activity.

Children will love making muddy puddles for pigs, building animal pens with mini blocks and transporting mud around the farm with scoops and bowls

Cleaning Up

When you’re finished, fill the PlayTRAY with warm, soapy water and provide sponges and scrubbing brushes so children can enjoy washing their cars, diggers and farm animals. Young children love to mimicking adult activities, and they may even surprise you by enjoying the cleaning-up part the most!

Vegetable Patch Small-World Play

If you’re making a vegetable patch, you’ll want your taste-safe mud to stay dry and crumbly so children can easily dig, plant and scoop.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup cocoa powder
  • 3.5 cups plain flour
  • ½ cup oil

Tip: Double the quantities above if you want to fill a larger tray like the PlayTRAY

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C/350°F.
  2. Spread the flour onto a baking tray and heat for 10 minutes.
  3. Wait for the flour to cool completely.
  4. Add the flour, cocoa powder and oil into a large bowl.
  5. Use your fingers to work the mixture together until it forms a crumbly, soil-like material.

Pop your taste-safe mud into the PlayTRAY and create a miniature vegetable patch by adding toy vegetables, pots, scoops, tongs and bowls. Children can plant, dig and harvest their veggies while exploring imaginative role play.

You could also add:

  • Dried leaves
  • Pebbles
  • Toy worms or bugs
  • Mini watering cans

Tip: If you want to really get creative, air-dry clay is great for making your own mini vegetables!

Tips for Stress-Free Sensory Play

Dress little ones in old clothes or just a nappy.  Place a wipe-clean mat or towel underneath your play setup.  Take play outdoors when possible.  Pop the lid on the PlayTRAY to return to the activity another day.

Whether your child is building a muddy construction site, planting vegetables or creating a farmyard scene, adding simple tools like scoops, bowls, mini bricks and mini blocks can help bring their play to life.
